RUMOR: Diamondbacks To Go After Jeff Samardzija After Patrick Corbin News

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers doesn’t usually wait long to fill a hole on his roster.

According to Bruce Levine of, the Diamondbacks are now in play for a top starter, and Jeff Samardzija–who the Diamondbacks and Cubs discussed earlier this winter–may be the most reasonable option.

With Tommy John surgery the likely end result for ace Patrick Corbin, Samardzija would step in at the top of the rotation for a team likely to contend in the NL West. The Diamondbacks do have in-house arm Randall Delgado available to step back into the rotation if a deal isn’t made before Opening Day.

The Cubs’ 29-year-old right-hander had a disappointing 4.34 ERA last season, but posted an elite 9.0 strikeout rate while pitching over 200 innings for the first time in his career.

The Cubs and Samardzija have discussed a contract extension at length for the duration of the offseason, but the two sides reportedly aren’t anywhere close to an agreement, so a trade could end up being the most beneficial outcome for both parties.
